Condensation and mould in Algarve homes: signs, prevention and next steps

Condensation is one of the most common sources of surface damp inside a home. It becomes visible when moisture in the air meets a cold surface and turns into small droplets. If this pattern repeats, cold areas can remain damp long enough for staining and mould to develop.

What commonly causes condensation

Showers, cooking, drying clothes indoors and normal breathing all add moisture to the air. Closed windows, inadequate extraction, cooler rooms and cold external walls make that moisture harder to remove. In the Algarve, coastal conditions, humid periods and properties left closed between visits can make indoor moisture management more difficult.

Signs you can observe

Frequently misted windows, droplets on glass, dark corners, bathroom ceiling marks, musty wardrobes and mould behind furniture against cold walls are all compatible with condensation. They do not prove the cause: leaks, water ingress and rising damp can create different or overlapping signs.

Useful steps at home

Ventilate briefly and effectively, particularly after showers and cooking. Use extractor fans where available, avoid drying large amounts of laundry in closed rooms and leave a small gap between furniture and cold external walls. A basic hygrometer helps you monitor relative humidity. A dehumidifier can help manage moisture, but it does not repair water ingress or a building defect.

Why painting over mould is not a solution

Paint may hide a mark temporarily, but it does not remove the moisture that keeps the surface vulnerable. Before finishing, the support should be assessed, loose material removed where necessary, the base cleaned and prepared, and compatible products selected.

When to request an assessment

Seek advice when marks return quickly, appear in several rooms, worsen after rain, involve blistering paint, salts or dripping, or when the source is unclear. Photographs, the position of the marks and information about when they appear all help with an initial review.

FAQ

Does a dehumidifier remove the cause of mould?

It can reduce moisture in the air, but it does not repair leaks, water ingress or thermal bridges.

Should I leave windows open for hours?

Short, effective ventilation is usually more useful than making the room cold for long periods.

Can I simply repaint the wall?

Finishing should only follow an assessment and proper preparation of the surface.
